Are Singaporeans cool enough to talk about giving head?

The furor of comments to The Straits Times after a police inspector was caught and punished under the law for receiving oral sex from another consenting younger woman opened up my eyes once more to another Singaporean idiosyncrasy.

Singaporeans surprised me again. All letters published wrote in to support the abolishment of the penal code which states that oral sex should be out of bounds by the state. The opinion seems to be this, “It is ok for us to give or receive heads whether it leads to vaginal sex or not” Since when did oral sex become ok in Singapore?

Ok. maybe I was hibernating. Can you blame me? The papers have hardly picked up this topic and you seriously don’t expect me to ask people if they like blow jobs or not in social conversations, do you? Moreover, in Singapore, what is not said or mentioned is taboo.

That explains why I was shocked that many has come out in support for the abolishment of the penal code.

Given that the letters coming in feels that it should not be considered a criminal offence. It might be high time we do something. After all, we don’t want any archaic laws to prevent us from putting whatever we desire into our mouths do we?

At the risk of sounding too liberal and daring, may I suggest we try to “normalise” oral sex and spread the view that it is ok to blow and be blown away. After all, couples all over the world have no problems with that either as a form of foreplay or a variation to keep their sex life interesting.

There are many ways we can put our thoughts from mouth to action:

1. Conduct a survey and find out how the population feels about oral sex. In case respondents misunderstood the purpose of the research, explain clearly in the survey that we are referring to oral sex between straight and not gay couples. This is because we do not want to jeopardize the possibility of abolishing the law if people think that it will mean endorsing gay sex. After all, gay sex is still a no no. Include questions such as

a. Do you know what oral sex is?
b. Define straight couple.
c. Do you think oral sex (without leading to vaginal sex) should be decriminalized between consenting straight adults
d. If yes, why, if not, why not, if not sure, why

2. Besides gathering public opinion, we could slip in advice to marrying adults on the 101 to “blow” up their sex life.

3. Provide medical advice on the preparations before performing so that we are clear on what is considered good oral hygiene.

4. We could even tie in oral sex to societal issues and economics to support the abolishment of the law. We could argue that oral sex leading to orgasm can prevent unwanted vaginal sex and hence reduce unwanted pregnancies. Promoting Protected Oral sex as an alternative to vaginal sex can reduce transmission of unwanted STDS. Oral sex, less tedious than vaginal sex, means that partners can be satisfied at home and at night, without needing to go to work next day feeling sleepy, thereby increasing work productivity. In fact, I’m sure there are more advantages to having oral sex than the conventional means.

As you can see, giving head is an important issue because it can affect our society morals and survival. A last word before I sign off, while all of you out there are going to give and receive, please make sure that you don’t lose your head while doing it.  ¶ 9:21 am
