The Singapore I One – Inspired by a CNA article
By Charles Tan

The Singapore I One

Is not a one-off channel newsasia video competition; propaganda for the easily deceived and swayed masses

The Singapore I One

A free press that reports the facets of truth

A liberal government that respects the rule of law, democracy and the rights of its citizens

A judiciary that is impartial to the average man on the streets

A society that tolerates and does not discriminate anyone based on religion, race, beliefs and convictions, age, gender, sexual orientation, educational background, material achievements

The Singapore I one

Believe convicts can reintegrate to society

Believe that death penalty is a draconian injustice

Believe that local artists should be given room to express themselves

Believe woman are equally important in society and family; with no room for patriachial patronism

Believe that singles have a right to lead their own lives as they deem fit

Believe children and youths deserve to be educated and have a voice despite their age

Believe that gays lesbians and transgenders have a right to form marriages, access to couple benefits, not be discriminated against in the workplace and other social areas

Believe that we should care for our environment and ecosystem

Believe in human rights and that the people has the power

The Singapore I One

Is not a state orchestrated automated Disney land movie

Is not an uncaring society with no room for the poor, disabled, disadvantaged and aged

Is not a top down authoritative system whereby people accepts things and believe or do what they are told

Is not a waste land of economic digits

The Singapore I one

Is a diverse land of opportunities with room for failure, human and emotional expressions

SINGAPORE : More Singaporeans turned up at Wheelock Place on the second day of Channel NewsAsia's "The Singapore I Want" roadshow.

They were all there to convey their wishes and aspirations for Singapore's 40th birthday.

Many were just eager to get their wishes in front of the camera.

"We wish Singapore a really happy birthday and we hope that Singapore will continue to grow from strength to strength," one person said.

"My wish for Singapore is actually for Singapore to have more babies this year," another said.

"National Day is a very special day for Singapore and for me because it’s our birthday. So I wish Singapore a very happy birthday," said a third person.

Some also heaped praises on the project.

"It’s great. It's a great initiative. It allows a collective response and well wishes of all Singaporeans to the nation," said one.

"You can find out from the public in what ways they are proud of Singapore and they can show their appreciation to what Singapore has given them all these years," another person said.

You can still have your say in the project.

Just pick up your camera and send a one minute video clip of the Singapore you want to Channel NewsAsia to celebrate the nation's birthday.

All you need to do is to log on to Channelnewsasia.com and print out the entry form.

You can send in your video on VCD, DVD or mini-DV tape in any of the four official languages.

You can also send in as many entries as you like. – CNA /ct
